Corpus Christi, TX (Nov. 19, 2019) Corpus Christi City Council amended milestones in SQH Sports and Entertainment’s 40-year ground lease contract with the City of Corpus Christi that was approved in October 2016, laying the foundation for construction to begin on Corpus Christi’s regional sports complex.
“It’s a great day for Corpus Christi and an even better day for all the student athletes in the city who want to play the sports they love,” said District 3 Corpus Christi City Councilman Roland Barrera. “Iam thrilled to have the new sports complex being built in my district in an underserved area.”
SQH Sports and Entertainment began talks with the city in 2010 when they identified a need for additional sports fields and recreational sports facilities. In August 2014, the city issued an RFP for a sports complex and SQH Sports and Entertainment was awarded the contract in 2016. After working with the city for 3 years to review, revise, and refine the project and public/private partnership, SQH Sports and Entertainment will be transforming land designated for a landfill into an economic incubator for the Southside.
SQH Sports and Entertainment is fully responsible for the financing and development of the
$30 million sports complex that will include an 80,000-square-foot field house with 6 basketball courts and 12 volleyball courts; 6 outdoor fields for soccer, lacrosse, and flag football; 8 baseball/softball diamonds; 10 sand volleyball courts; concession stands at the fields; and a youth outdoor playground area.
The sports complex will be central in launching and maintaining community health initiatives, building a sense of camaraderie among residents, while at the same providing economic benefit to the city.
Economic feasibility studies project the park could bring in $14 million in tax revenue in the first 5 years of operation, drawing close to 200,000 visitors annually.
“With the ability to host weekend tournaments in a variety of sports at the local, regional and national levels, we hope to elevate Corpus Christi to a premiere club sports destination,” said Brent Statzer, SQH Sports and Entertainment CEO, and 30-year veteran to the entertainment industry.
There are strict milestones within the public/private partnership agreement that provide for property inspection, utility plans and project funding and designs. If all milestones are met on time, construction could begin as early as Spring 2020.
“We are confident that in 2022 we will be opening an elite regional sports complex in Corpus Christi, one that youth and adult sports enthusiasts and all residents will be extremely proud to calltheir own,” said Statzer. “Our reputation for finitely managing acclaimed theme parks and largeevents is paramount to our success. With our focus and hard work, this sports complex will be the crown jewel of sports in Texas.”
